David’s I’m Back Story: Right Hip Replacement with Anterior Approach

Hip pain was getting in the way of David’s everyday life, and the sport he loves most: cross-country skiing. After hip replacement surgery with the anterior approach at OSMS, David was back on the trails in time for ski season.

About a year ago, David’s right hip began to flare up with pain. Having gone through a hip replacement on his left hip six years earlier, he knew this pain most likely meant he would need another hip replacement.

The difference this time around, however, was that the pain progressed quickly, worsening day by day. David recalled thinking, “Wow, I don’t know if I can ski this year.”

So, David met with his OSMS rheumatologist for a referral and was connected with Dr. Gordon Roedel, one of OSMS’s Hip & Knee Replacement Specialists.

“When we met with him, it just reaffirmed that this guy is really good and he knows what he’s doing,” David said.

With cross-country ski season starting in December, David’s goal was to be back on the trails in time. He shared that he “was pushing it [surgery] to get it done as fast as I could.”

After surgery in October, Dr. Roedel cleared David in mid-December to start cross-country skiing again.

The first time he went out, David skied about a mile two months after surgery and had no pain.

“I thought that was fantastic, and that gave me a really great feeling about OSMS,” David said. “And the rheumatologist is also very good!”

Later that same cross-country ski season, David was able to finish the Korteloppet at the Birkebeiner in Hayward, Wisconsin.

Thanks to OSMS, David is back on the trails!
