Maddy’s Story: Division 1 College Basketball Player with a Wrist Injury

You’re a division 1 college basketball athlete in the middle of your senior season, injured, facing two options for treatment. Option one: let the injury heal on its own, bringing your college basketball athletic career to an end. Option two: have surgery, be out for six weeks to rehab, but return to playing your sport, bringing your athletic career to a successful close.

To Maddy Schreiber, Division 1 Collegiate Basketball Player in Green Bay, the choice was simple – have the surgery.

During one of her college basketball games in December of 2024, Maddy ended up injuring her wrist while she was diving for the ball. She played through the entire game with her injury, only realizing that something was truly wrong after the game finished.

A few days after the game, and taking time to evaluate her wrist, Maddy decided to see a physical therapist who referred her to Dr. Zellner, Hand to Shoulder Specialist at OSMS.

Maddy explained, “My first impressions of OSMS were that everybody was very kind and welcoming. I wasn’t necessarily super happy to be there with a basketball injury, but everybody just made me realize that it was all going to be okay.”

After being presented with two options for treatment, either letting her wrist heal on its own, or having surgery, Maddy decided to have surgery.

“My surgery process was a little bit nerve-wracking, as it would be for most, but the people at OSMS made it really calming and made sure I knew what was going on. Some cracked jokes, others were just making sure that I knew what each step looked like, and it just made me have a sense of relief,” described Maddy.

Although Maddy was out for six weeks to recover from her injury, she accomplished many accolades to finish her college athletic career on a strong note.

After Maddy’s injury, she was conference player of the week once, ended the year First Team All-Conference, and helped her team make the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, Maddy was the only player in men’s or women’s college basketball to average above 50% in field goals, above 50% in three pointers, and above 90% in free throws in conference play.

When asked what advice she would give to an athlete or anyone with an injury, she said, “My advice for someone who is going through an injury or pain would be to refer them to OSMS because of my experience that I had there. Everybody is very welcoming and nice, and they get you back to the sport or your daily living. I just loved my experience there.”

Thanks to OSMS, Maddy is Back!
