When a primary care provider (PCP) recommends that you or your family member should see an orthopedic or rheumatology specialist, have you ever stopped to think about the influences behind their recommendation?
Chances are, those referrals are made in your doctor’s best interest – not yours.
“Leakage” is the term health care systems use when patients see doctors from a different health care group, and health care systems keep a close eye on their leakage reports to keep you in their system. Factors like lack of information, simplicity, and pressure from executives to keep patients (and your pocketbooks) within their system can cause PCPs to make decisions that are not in your best interest. But even if your PCP is not confident, you can be.
When being told you need to make yet another appointment, you feel overwhelmed and it might be easier not to question anything – especially when it comes from a doctor you trust. But it’s your health. It’s your family. Why settle if there is a better option?
OSMS cares about what’s best for you and your loved ones.
We’re here to remind you that your health care shouldn’t be limited to a certain health care system. You can make different choices, see different specialists and go to different clinics. Take back your life in a way that works for you.

What if this…
“My daughter hurt her foot at basketball practice, and we ended up in an urgent care clinic. After an x-ray, the doctor told us we needed to see an orthopedist and made a referral to someone within their health system. I asked to be referred to OSMS because Dr. Avery has treated my whole family, but the doctor told me they weren’t ‘allowed’ to refer us to OSMS.”

…is keeping you from this?
“My son recently injured his foot in a basketball game and we chose to take him to the OSMS Acute Injury Clinic. We chose OSMS because a few years prior we went to a hospital system’s urgent care where they gave him an x-ray, wrapped his foot up and told us to call and make an appointment with their orthopedic group the next day. We waited two days for the appointment where they x-rayed it again and then put it in a cast. By taking him into OSMS, we were able to see an orthopedic doctor at our first appointment, get a set of x-rays right away, and walk out with a boot on his foot. Within an hour we had the testing, diagnosis and treatment plan set. Going to OSMS saved me time and they did everything at once rather than having to make multiple appointments.”
