Procedure Room
If you need surgery, it can be frustrating figuring out how to fit that into your daily schedule. Between work, errands, your kids’ sports, and the many other things you have going on in your life, your time is precious.
But imagine being able to fit surgery into your day without needing to go home after surgery to recover from anesthesia effects. In fact, imagine having surgery and being able to drive yourself home the same day.
We have news for you – this scenario is not something you can only imagine, it’s real!
Patients at OSMS can have some procedures performed right in the OSMS clinic setting, in what we call our Procedure Room. This type of treatment is often called “office-based surgery” or “wide awake local anesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT)”. Due to innovative surgical techniques, in this setting, patients can undergo minimally invasive surgery using local anesthesia.
How the Procedure Room Works
The procedures performed in the OSMS Procedure Room are the same ones performed in the surgery center, using the same tools and following the same techniques. So, as long as patients are comfortable with the office-based setting, then the wide-awake local anesthesia procedures will be scheduled in our procedure room.
Many other surgeons outside of OSMS are performing these procedures with some form of anesthesia. This requires patients to have a driver and to recover from the effects of anesthesia. The minimally invasive approach from OSMS Physicians in the procedure room is a more straightforward experience, saving you time and money.

Benefits of Local Anesthesia Procedures
There are many benefits patients will find from having office-based surgery in the OSMS Procedure Room. Not only do patients save time and money, but procedure room procedures allow for flexibility in schedules and quicker recovery.
1. Time
- Fewer pre-procedure tests mean you’ll have fewer appointments to schedule and go to prior to your surgery.
- Typically, patients are in our OSMS clinic for about an hour for their office-based surgery. Most of the time spent in clinic is letting the medication work, numbing the surgical site before operating. The local anesthesia can take anywhere from 20-30 minutes to take effect.
- Patients can go home right after their procedure is complete because they do not have to recover from anesthesia. Recovery instructions will be reviewed with the patient during their procedure, rather than after.
- Patients can immediately resume most daily activities with a bandage on the surgical area. Your OSMS surgeon will go over any specific restrictions based on each unique injury and procedure.
2. Cost
- Saving time also saves money. Since procedure room surgeries do not require pre-surgical tests, the overall cost of care will be less, due to there being fewer appointments leading up to surgery.
- Patients will not have overnight stay or operating room costs, so on average, patients’ office-based procedures will cost about 60-74% less* than if it were performed in a hospital or surgery center. This significant cost savings could be very beneficial to patients with high-deductible health plans.

3. Flexibility
- We are flexible with scheduling and will work with you to find a procedure time that works best for you and your schedule. Thankfully, you will only need about one hour taken out of your schedule for surgery!
- Office-based procedures may be a good option for patients who are nervous about going under anesthesia. They also allow patients to receive treatment who might not typically be able to have surgery due to health conditions like diabetes or an inability to stop medications leading up to surgery.
4. Recovery
- Patients having surgery in the OSMS Procedure Room do not have to recover from anesthesia or sedatives.
- Office-based procedures are minimally invasive, meaning that incisions are smaller and less invasive. Post-operative complications like infections are not common because of the compact surgical site.
- Because procedures are minimally invasive, patients recover more quickly, meaning they can immediately return to most daily activities at a faster rate (as long as you abide with your restrictions).
- Depending on the procedure, there will be weight-bearing restrictions. This is done to protect the sutures from breaking and the incision from opening. Most surgeons use absorbable sutures, meaning patients do not need to have their sutures removed in a post-op appointment.
- If patients have hand surgery, they can brush their teeth, eat, write, and type with their surgical hand if they feel comfortable doing so. Patients are encouraged to move their hand/fingers, as we do not want them to become stiff after surgery. Movement also helps with swelling.
- Your OSMS surgeon will go over recovery instructions and any specific restrictions based on each unique injury and procedure. For pain management, Tylenol and Aleve may be enough, however, if you require something stronger, you will need to talk with your care team about what options are available to you.
- If patients require work restrictions, OSMS can accommodate those depending on your job and daily routines. Some patients may have restrictions as little as 2 weeks, whereas others may have restrictions up to 6 weeks with weight increments if their job requires heavy lifting.
