From arrival to discharge, our process is designed to make your experience personalized to you.
The OSMS PREP Team are always here to answer any questions or address concerns that you may have.
PRE-SURGERY
- Meet with a member of the OSMS PREP Team
- Review your current medications and past medical history
- Arrange any labs, testing, or surgical clearance you may need
- Discuss any questions you may have about your surgery
- Ready your home and make sure you have the necessary support for afterward
- Review detailed preoperative guidelines including NPO and preoperative showering
- Joint replacement patients, be sure to review the joint journey booklet
- Obtain prescribed preoperative medications, as instructed
- You will receive your surgery time along with your arrival time the day before your scheduled surgery date
- A member of our business office will contact you to discuss financial responsibilities and will confirm your insurance coverage prior to your surgery
- As part of our efforts to serve our community, we gladly accept Medicare assignment and participate in a number of managed care and insurance programs. We do accept all major credit cards.
- If you suspect you are pregnant, please notify your surgeon. Anesthesia and certain medications may be harmful to the developing fetus.
THE NIGHT BEFORE YOUR SURGERY
Please DO NOT eat any solid food for eight hours prior to arrival time.
Please DO NOT drink any liquid for four hours prior to your arrival time.
This includes water, gum, and mints.
If you do not do this, your procedure may have to be canceled, delayed, or rescheduled.
*If you choose to drink coffee, up to 4 hours before surgery arrival time, it must be black coffee. No cream, no sugar.
THE MORNING OF YOUR SURGERY
- Patients should arrive 90 minutes before surgery. Patients who are scheduled with local anesthetic are allowed to arrive 60 minutes before surgery. On occasion, unforeseen circumstances require us to adjust surgery times. We will do our best to keep you informed if we are ahead of schedule or delayed.
- Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. If you are having shoulder surgery, make sure to wear or bring an over-sized button-up or zip-up sweatshirt to wear home.
- Remember to bring your insurance cards and photo ID.
- Bring any items such as: C-pap machine, crutches, cane or walker, immobilizer/brace, or ice cooler.
- Bring a responsible adult (18+) to accompany you during surgery.
- Persons under 18 years of age MUST have a parent or legal guardian with them to sign the consent forms.
- Bring any prescription medications with you in the original bottle(s), including insulin and asthma inhalers.
- Make sure to remove all jewelry, watches, makeup, or nail polish. If you wear contact lenses, please bring a case and your glasses with you.
POST-SURGERY
- You MUST have a responsible adult to stay with you
- You are encouraged to follow all of your specific discharge instructions
- Ice, elevate, and use pain medication as prescribed for pain control
- Progress your diet slowly and drink plenty of water
- A member of our care team will contact you the following day

LEAVING THE SURGERY CENTER
For most non-joint replacement procedures, patients are typically ready to leave the surgery center within two hours following surgery. You will receive specific discharge instructions, both verbal and written, before leaving. A surgery center team member will contact you after you have been home to check your progress and answer any questions.
